A Message from Your Fire Chief

By Nick Swinhart, Fire Chief, Key Peninsula Fire Department

Good afternoon, Key Peninsula residents!

It has been my honor to serve as your Fire Chief for the past three years. During that time, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the incredible dedication and professionalism of our firefighters, paramedics and support staff. Their commitment to protecting lives and property on the Key Peninsula is second to none. We can all sleep a little easier knowing these highly trained men and women are ready to respond at a moment’s notice and are willing to serve in any capacity.

As we head into warmer weather, I want to take a moment to remind everyone to stay safe while enjoying the outdoors. Our lush forests and beautiful waters are part of what makes the Key Peninsula so special—but they also bring risks. We’ve already responded to our first brush fire of the season, which could have quickly gotten out of control if not for the swift actions of our crews. Please be extra cautious with anything that could spark a fire.

And while that Puget Sound water may look inviting, it remains dangerously cold even on the hottest days. Cold-water shock is a real threat. We now have our rescue boat stationed at Longbranch Marina, but it still takes time to reach you in an emergency. Please wear a life jacket and make water safety a priority for yourself and your loved ones.

I also want to take a moment to talk about an important initiative that will appear on your August 5 ballot: our EMS Levy Lid Lift. This measure asks voters to restore our EMS levy rate to the previously approved $0.50 per $1,000 of assessed property value. If passed, it would:

• Restore our minimum daily staffing levels

• Fill four vacant firefighter positions

• Eliminate the temporary closures of our Longbranch station that have occurred since January 1

For the owner of a $500,000 home, this would mean an additional $7.29 per month—a modest increase that would make a significant difference in your emergency medical services.

We’re deeply grateful for your ongoing support of the fire district. Our mission is to serve you with integrity, compassion, and excellence—and we remain committed to earning your trust every single day.

If you have questions about the EMS levy or anything else related to our department, please visit us at our booth during the Livable Community Fair on May 10 at the Key Peninsula Civic Center. We’d love to talk with you.

Stay safe,

Nick Swinhart
