The Key Peninsula Fire Department is responsible for the protection of an estimated population of over 18,900 citizens who reside on the Key Peninsula and Herron Island. Our District covers an area of approximately 68 square miles (that’s 18 square miles larger than the City of Tacoma), and offers several services including; Fire Suppression, Advanced Life Support, Water Rescue, and Public Education Outreach. A highly trained core of professionals; 4 Staff Officers, 6 Shift Officers, 14 Career Firefighters, and 30 Volunteer Firefighters provide these services. The District also employs 4 administrative and support personnel.

Our Department was organized in 1952. It began, as a Department comprised of all volunteer members. Over the years, the mission for the fire service has changed dramatically, thereby increasing the number of alarms and involving more complex responsibilities and challenges. These changes became time consuming for the volunteer force, and led to the District hiring its first career personnel in the early 1980's. The District now utilizes a combination approach by having career and volunteer members working together to deliver outstanding fire department services.
