The Key Peninsula was originally called Longbranch Peninsula based on the maps of the Wilkes Expedition. In the 1930s, Key Peninsula was officially adopted as the name of the Peninsula. A contest was sponsored to select a new official name for the Peninsula in 1931 by the business community. The entry “Key Peninsula” (based on the shape of the Peninsula) was submitted by Ed M. Stone of Lakebay who won the prize. Click Here to read more about the early history of the Key Peninsula.
