The Key Peninsula, located west of Gig Harbor is a beautiful peninsula made up of 65 square miles and offers wonderful forested parks and scenic views as well as agricultural and maritime history. There are more than 70 miles of shore line that wrap around the peninsula. The geography of the Key Peninsula and the distribution of population density make it challenging to provide firefighting and medical aid coverage. The peninsula is approximately 16 miles long and is just under 2 miles wide at it's narrowest point. The roads on the Key Peninsula are notorious for being narrow and windy which lead to many automobile crashes and pose a serious risk for crews responding to emergencies.According to the 2010 Census there are just over 17,000 residents residing on the Key Peninsula. Two of the largest population densities are located on opposing ends of the peninsula which adds to complexity of trying to balance resources and staffing goals.
